Description
NATURE TRAIL: ONE Sycamore (T1)(ht.14m) FELL. Reason: large cavity that compromises the integrity of the stem, health & safety issues. Another native tree will be planted as a replacement.NATURE TRAIL: ONE Sycamore (T36)(ht.14m) FELL. Reason: decayed base, due to Kretzschmaria deusta (brittle cinder decay fungus), to address safety issues. Another native tree will be planted as a replacement. (T36 has previous consent to fell in 6-week notice DC/23/133795). CENTRAL: ONE Lime (T44)(ht.14m) FELL. Reason: health & safety, PICUS investigation following sounding mallet concern, confirms large internal cavity across the stem, high target risk by path. Another native tree will be planted as a replacement, PICUS report recommends a suitable large tree species as replacement.CENTRAL: ONE Oak (T48)(ht.12m) HEIGHT REDUCE by 6m from 12m to a 6m monolith. Reason: die back in the canopy, possible Acute Oak Decline, important wildlife cavities. Work to prevent safety issues, retain as monolith for wildlife and biodiversity.NORTH: ONE dead Sycamore (T61)(ht.12m) FELL. Reason: health & safety. Another native tree will be planted as a replacement, Duty to replace applies.NORTH: ONE Oak (T69)(ht.18m) remove dead wood (exempt work). Reason: remove major deadwood as a footpath runs below the canopy.NORTH: ONE Oak (T70)(ht.21m) CROWN REDUCE HEIGHT by 3m from 21m to 18m, REDUCE RADIUS by 2m from 14m to 12m on all compass points. Reason: sounding mallet suggests a dull hollowing in stem, reduction with regard to stem condition, to shape canopy, pruning to suitable points and maintaining natural aesthetic. CENTRAL: ONE Oak (T95)(ht.20m) CROWN REDUCE HEIGHT by 3m from 20m to 17m, REDUCE RADIUS by 3m from 18m to 15m on all compass points. Reason: very large significant tree, PICUS test showed a stem cavity, sensitive reduction to address condition, shape canopy, pruning to suitable points, not beyond any previous reduction points, and maintaining natural aesthetic.FRONT A205: ONE Lime (T138)(ht.18m) remove dead wood (exempt work). Reason: remove major deadwood as footpath & highway below the canopy.FRONT A205: ONE Horse chestnut (T141)(ht.16m) REDUCE LATERAL SPREAD by 3m from 11m to 8m on all compass points. Reason: The overall height will remain the same. Reduction to shape canopy, pruning to suitable points and maintaining natural aesthetic, laterals over the road are weight loaded and pruning will reduce the likelihood of failure. MAIN PATH: ONE Horse Chestnut (T150)(ht.18m) remove dead wood (exempt work). Reason: remove major deadwood as a footpath runs below the canopy.Late additions:NORTH (rear butterfly House): ONE Oak (approx.ht.15m) LATERAL REDUCE by approx.2m one branch on E compass. Reason: to clear roof flue on butterfly house.CENTRAL: ONE Purple Plum (approx.ht.8m) LATERAL REDUCE one branch. Reason: to reduce weight of vertical branch with weak fork on broken branch, by main paths.Informative A: the replacement large canopy trees are hugely appreciated to maintain the treed character of the Horniman Gardens with specimen trees and wooded boundaries. Duty to replace applies: dead sycamore T61; voluntary replacements: 2x sycamore T1,T36, and lime T44. Species such as: sessile oak, hornbeam, hop hornbeam, field maple, beech, wild cherry, holly, willow, sycamore, whitebeam, wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis), Indian horse chestnut, Tulip tree, wingnut, Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum), Italian alder, Hackberry (Celtis australis). Informative B: the felled stem of Lime T44 is encouraged to be left on the ground in the meadow to inform the carbon cycle, importance for wildlife and biodiversity, and if possible retain safe standing monolith of dead sycamore T61 with creation of habitat log piles with arisings.
