Description
We are seeking permission to install temporary safety railings around the perimeter of the rear section of the roof at Fort Perch Rock. This measure is urgently required to mitigate a serious risk to life due to a sheer drop from the roof edge, which currently presents a significant hazard. The existing wooden railings, originally installed in the 1980s, have deteriorated significantly over time and are now rotten, unstable, and unsafe. As such, they no longer provide adequate protection and have become a hazard in their own right. We propose to remove the damaged railings and install temporary railings approximately 1.2 metres in height, constructed to appropriate safety standards, to provide a secure barrier along the edge. These railings will be non-invasive and reversible, ensuring no long-term impact on the structure while immediate safety concerns are addressed. The temporary railings are intended as an interim measure, to remain in place while we fundraise for the design and installation of permanent railings. These future permanent railings will be constructed in keeping with the historic character and materials of the existing fort structure, and will be subject to a separate planning application once funding and design approval have been secured. Given the immediate risk to public and staff safety, we respectfully request that this proposal is treated as a priority matter.
