Application Details
Description
The trustees of Betjeman Millenium Park, Mill Street, Wantage have commissioned Paul Jenks (Jenks Oxford arborists, https://www.jenksoxford.co.uk/) to conduct a survey of the trees in the park. Several issues were identified that we will be monitoring or acting to rectify in coming years according to priority. We propose to deal with two of the issues raised by the survey in this tree work application plus two ongoing maintainance activities. 1) Felling of a large, mature sycamore tree (tagged T655). The location of the tree is indicated as number 1 on the park plan and the relevant section of the tree survey and photographs of the tree are shown in 1a and 1b in the additional information. The tree survey notes: "Basal epicormic growth. Squirrel damage. Decay at base. Kretzschmaria Deusta developing on east side." The survey indicates this work to have a medium to high priority and recommends we carry it out in the next two years. 2) We have a lime (tagged T642( and and ash (tagged T641) tree growing closely together (number 2 on park map and the relevant section of the tree survey and photographs are shown in 2a and 2b in additional details). The lime tree has a large limb growing into the ash tree. We would like to remove this limb to give both trees space and allow the lime tree to put its energy into the limb that is growing straight. 3) We have numerous hazel stools in the park that have been historically coppiced. In the last two years we have coppiced 4 stools and these are regenerating nicely. We would like to move to the next groups of hazels as part of an ongoing management strategy in which hazels stools are coppiced every 7-12 years. The groups of hazels that we will coppice next are indicated with the number 3 on the park plan in additional materials and two examples shown in photograph 3. 4) There are various tall ash and sycamore trees in the park with branch damage high up. Examples of this are shown in photograph 4 in the additional details. When we get a tree surgeon out to remove the sycamore and the limb of the lime tree we would like to also get them to take down some of these broken, dead or damaged branches.
