Description
JUSTIFICATION The two trees are in a row of four ornamental trees (species unknown) that were planted parallel with the churchyard wall approximately 50 years ago. One of the trees (A on the sketch plan) is dead; the other (B on the sketch plan) is dying. The PCC has decided, on health and safety grounds, that both trees should be felled. Originally there were about 12 such trees, stretching all the way along the churchyard wall from one gate to the other, but half of them were replaced with new trees about five years ago. The PCC has no immediate plans to replace the two trees in question but will consider this in due course. DIMENSIONS OF THE TREES Diameter of trunk (1 m from the ground): 15 cm Height: 4 m Distance from wall: 2 m EXPERT REPORT ON THE CONDITION OF THE TWO TREES by John Brannan, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture (retired): "The sickly tree [B] is still alive but has a massive wound from the base upwards and the stem has significant necrosis, so much so that it is structurally compromised and in danger of possibly falling over into the road. There is clearly a safety issue with it and while it may continue to live for a while longer , it will never thrive again. Just along the row beyond the large tree there is another similar ornamental tree [A] which is completely dead and while the stem is sound, the tree serves no purpose anymore and would better be replaced at some point before it falls over." CONTRACTOR FOR THE FELLING OF THE TREES Stephen Verge, ND Forestry, of Wallingford has been contracted to fell the trees. He will fell the trees to ground level.
