Description
Horse chestnut (Tag 1366) Fell to leave a 1m stump for regeneration and ongoing periodic coppice management. Reason: the tree has a large open cavity at 3.5m on the east side. Climbed inspection has shown that there is decay coalescence within the heartwood. The tree has a fully crown with substantial weight (especially during summer when in leaf and during rain). Structural failure is reasonably foreseeable and a risk assessment has identified that the tree poses a level of risk that is ‘not tolerable’ and that it is a high priority (as soon as possible) for work. Sweet chestnut (immediately to the east of the above horse chestnut (Tag 1366)) Crown reduce in height and spread on the northern side (over the road) by 2-3m from branch tips to leave a rounded overall form. Carry out specific tree pruning to minor stems and lower branches as indicated on attached photograph. Reason: the tree is tall and thin. Exposure by the removal of the adjacent large horse chestnut would be likely to lead to branch failures onto the road during stormy weather. W1: various species in quarry area - carry out ‘halo’ management by selective removal of smaller trees marked with orange paint, to create space/light to encourage the development of better-quality trees and improve overall structure of woodland. W1: various species in central and E area - carry out thinning management by selective removal of smaller trees marked with paint, to create space/light to encourage development of better quality trees and improve overall structure of the woodland, plant x3 Yew and x2 Sessile Oak along roadside edge and uphill side of track, to provide eventual replacement for Sweet Chestnuts showing signs of deterioration. W1: various species in general - carry out selective removal of Rhododendron and Cherry Laurel, to remove invasive species and create space on woodland floor to encourage development of herb layer and improve overall structure of woodland.
