Description

The proposal is for works to the existing Chard Reservoir and the overarching driver for the scheme is to ensure the safety of the reservoir and thereby protect the downstream communities from the severe consequences that would result from a breach of the reservoir (for further information, refer to the Reservoirs Act 1975). The works under the scheme comprise: - Raising a localised low spot in the sidewall of the auxiliary overflow chute. - Reinforcing a portion of the embankment downstream face and toe. - Raising the embankment crest by constructing a low-height wall along the upstream edge of the road (Chaffcombe Lane) over the entire length of the dam. - Raise the northern (downstream) sidewall of the stilling basin by up to 1m over a length of approximately 16m. - Fill in / block off (i.e., prevent flows through) the two left-most (looking downstream) auxiliary overflow culverts. These culverts are to be converted to bat roosts.
