Application Details
Description
This application relates to two ash trees located within the hedgerow at 2 Bell Lane, Monks Kirby. The accompanying site plan identifies the trees as Ash 1 and Ash 2. Both trees have been inspected and are exhibiting symptoms consistent with Ash Dieback disease. Ash 1 has a number of compromised and declining limbs throughout the canopy. Approximately half of the canopy overhangs Main Street, which is a principal route through the village, including a bus route and access road to the local school. Due to the extent of the dieback, the presence of structurally weakened limbs, and the potential risk to highway users and pedestrians, permission is sought to fell Ash 1 on safety grounds. As part of the proposed works, gaps within the hedgerow will be replanted using species already present within the existing hedge, together with the planting of at least three native and/or fruit-bearing tree species to enhance local biodiversity and maintain the character of the conservation area. Ash 2 is also affected by Ash Dieback, with several limbs within the upper crown and central canopy showing signs of decline. In addition, significant ivy growth is present on the trunk, which is contributing to the trees deterioration and restricting inspection of the stem. Permission is therefore sought to: - Cut back the ivy growth on Ash 2 to approximately 5 feet above ground level and allow the remaining ivy to naturally die back; - Reduce the canopy by approximately 10 feet; and - Remove any dead, dying, or diseased limbs affected by Ash Dieback. The proposed works are intended to manage the trees responsibly, reduce risk to the public, and retain where possible the visual amenity and character of the site within the conservation area.
