Description
T1 - Large Sycamore Remove tree. T1 is a large Sycamore situated to the rear of 33 Lucknow Drive. The Tree is approximately 25m tall with an estimated DBH of 40". The crown of the tree features multiple previous limb failures (See pic 1) and is devoid of any internal growth. At approximately 6m above ground level, there is a cavity on the Western side of the stem (Pic 4). This cavity features a black exudate which has stained the stem. Although it was not present at the time of my site visit, the tree owners report a large fungal bracket which grows from the site of the cavity, from their description it sounds as though Cerioporus squamosus is the decay fungi in question. The presence of this fungi would indicate continued decay of the structural timber within the stem. At the base of the tree, there are two desiccated fungal brackets (suspected Perenniporia fraxinea - Pic 2). Although the surrounding area does appear to display good reactive wood, I would question how long the tree will be able to sustain continued decay at this period in its life given the static mass that it must support. Furthermore, upon closer inspection, I discovered that the underside of some of the large structural roots has experienced decay, with a very distinct flattening of the root being visible without the need for root excavation. (See Pic 3) Given the location of the tree within a residential setting, I believe that the most suitable course of action is to remove the tree entirely and re-plant with a suitable specimen. Unfortunately the tree does appear to have reached over-maturity and in the current residential setting it cannot be left to it's own natural processes which would be the preferred course of action in a more suitable environment.
