Description
The proposal is the construction of drinking water pond that will hold between 5000 to 5500 cubic meters of water. Additional to this is the installation of a access ring and water pump for abstraction of clean water from the spring. This will replace the existing pump that has been in place for over 40 years. Materials will be excavated just offline from the source of the spring where small diversion for the water can be channeled. The access ring and pump can then be installed with limestone filter media along the new channel covering the inlet. The pond will be constructed using imported materials under Definition of Waste Code of Practice (DoWCoP) in compliance with waste regulations whilst ensuring no harm to human health or the environment. The topsoil will be stripped and stored in the form of a bund down slope of the area to mitigate any surface water run off during the construction phase. An attenuation pond will be installed on the southeast corner of the works as a additional mitigation measure for silt run off. A low permeability clay will be used to line the pond. This will serve to hold the water minimising loss through seepage. The topsoil will be preserved to be spread over batters to reestablish grazing areas once complete. Why necessary for agriculture: The extended dry period experienced in recent summer months has meant almost all the brooks and ponds around the farm have dried up. Ensuring sufficient water is available to sustain the livestock has put tremendous strain, cost and recourse on the landowners. The farm itself has never been supplied with mains water and has relied upon abstraction from the spring which provides a continuous source of fresh water sufficient to maintain the farmhouse all year round. Additionally, water is used to service the livestock in the sheds, however there is no available drinking water in surrounding farm. The construction of a large pond would serve the livestock in dry spells which are increasing because
