Description

Slipways: Repointing to stone masonry walls. King William Pier (grade B1 listed) KWP is in poor structural condition and require remedial works to ensure its stability. . There are two main distinguishabe forms of construction: - 'square' masonry blocks sections, with old pointing washed out: Record information indicates that part of this pier was taken down and rebuilt in 1990 due to its poor condition, and underpinning carried out. Due to funding issues, the repairs were undertaken only at discrete locations and the remaining unrepaired areas continued to deteriorate. A similar underpin/concrete skirt is proposed throughout the pier, with top level maximum 450mm below mid tide level. Repointing throughout is proposed. - round head: The bottom layer consists of unbound round loose stones that have moved over time, causing the structure to lose its integral form. It is proposed to underpin the bottom layer of stones with a concrete skirt. The top level of the skirt will be below mid-tide level. The head is believed to be founded on boulder clay, different that the remaining of the harbour founded in marl. Floor stones to be lifted and reset. Modern harbour, part of KWP setting: Albert Edward Pier There is a short section with large sandstones that are eroded and large voids noted. Some of the coping stones are loose as the underlaying sandstone eroded. Coping stones to be lifted and reset over a steel plate to bridge the gaps while leaving the eroded sandstone in place. Repointing to the back of sandstone blocks. The concrete outer parapet wall is in very poor condition with large cracks and voids noted. A new RC skin is proposed. Anodes are to be installed to the sheet pile walls. North Wall Apply sealant to joints Alexandra Pier The outer parapet wall is in very poor condition with large cracks and voids noted. A new RC skin is proposed. Anodes are to be installed to the sheet pile walls.
