Application Details
Description

Restoration and habitat creation works are proposed for the parcel of land adjacent Nichols Moss which covers an area of 2.5 ha of formerly grazed field . These restoration works form part of a broader restoration objectives of Cumbria Wildlife Trust. The area seeks to restore the bottom half (southwest half) of the site to lowland raised bog and 'lagg' habitat and reconnect it to the existing Nichols Moss SSSI. This area overlies deep peat deposits and the works seek to reconnect these deposits to the existing raised bog habitat of Nichols Moss SSSI. This will be done through removal of field drains, creation of a network of cell bunding to retain water and rewet the surface. Inoculation with sphagnum moss, and appropriate wetland/bog plants is also proposed to help establish suitable bog/lagg vegetation.
