Thames Ditton Conservation Area - 1: Ash (fraxinus Excelsior) Tree number 3 on the report: Crown reduce by 2.5m Tree rated 'U' (Trees unsuitable for retention - those in such a condition that they cannot realistically be retained as living trees in the context of the current land use for longer than 10 years. The preliminary maintenance recommendation is to reduce the crown by 2.5m within 6 month and then reassess the tree. Tree has two dysfunctional wounds at 1m and 1.5m to northern aspect of stem. A further dysfunctional area exists at 2m; the site of historic secondary stem removal. Decay extents are a considerable proportion of the stem diameter and continue beneath the existing stem. Exact extents unknown, but extends beyond 400mm in this area. Second major area of dysfunction and decay noted at 4m on retained stem, facing north. Exact decay extents unknown, but tree shows evidence of hollowing at this point. Large 350mm wound on westernmost primary limb at 4.5m which has been caused by limb failure. Tree looks to have been pruned heavily in the distant past at circa 5m, with epicormic growth beyond this. Daldinia concentrica noted at 1m to north of stem, and around second dysfunctional area and historic limb failure site. 2. Cherry Tree (Prunus Avium) Tree number 10 on the report: Fell to the ground Tree rated 'U' (Trees unsuitable for retention - those in such a condition that they cannot realistically be retained as living trees in the context of the current land use for longer than 10 years. Bleeding canker noted on main stem at 1.5m on northern and southern aspect. Considerable area of delamination on westernmost leader at 2.5m; just above union. Limited wound wood noted, but bleeding canker present. Crown historically pruned back from eastern aspect (over neighbours). Foliage is of poor quality and wilting heavily, possibly caused by silver leaf disease in part.
