Description

The tree in question is technically an evergreen shrub- Pittosporum tenuifolium that has been grown into a tree form reaching approx 8m in height, with multiple stems in the back garden of my flat. The work required is crown thinning, as currently in high winds the tree is creaking slightly, and a slight 0.5-1m reduction in the edge of the canopy over my neighbour's garden at #52 as the canopy has become off-centre due to prevailing winds and previous removal of a large stem (before our time in the property, to make the shape more central and reduce the risk of future issues.i've assessed the tree and there's no decay, cavities, concerning bark inclusions or indication of fungal disease or other health concerns (i am a professional horticulturist and hold LANTRA basic tree inspection certification), it' is otherwise healthy with good extension growth and flowering, which is a delight for the whole street due to the pleasant smell, so i'd really like to preserve it for as long as possible.I wish to reduce congestion in the crown, removing no more than 1/4 of the branches, and some minimal tip reduction with a view to not encouraging excessive regrowth/bushiness and correcting/removing some weaker growth and crossing stems. I intend to accomplish this with a combination of pole loppers and pruning saw cuts with no chainsaw/rope access/chipper needed, removing the arisings myself. It has been about 5 years since it's last pruning and while the tree is healthy, it's very mature for this species, so a judicious pruning of this nature will hopefully invigorate and prolong it's life without affecting aesthetics unduly.
