Application Details
Description
Applying for licence for 5% small tree thinning over a 5 year period, within the red marked area on the map. This is to allow the remaining trees to continue to grow and mature into a good shape. In the same area we would like a 10 year licence to crown lift to 3 metres within views, groves, closed groves and shrubberies to allow the understory to grow. The trees are a mixture of different species including Oak, Beech, Pines and Yew.In addition a 10 year licence to pollard or coppice some of the field maples within the same marked area. This is to provide views across the landscape and to mitigate the damage being made by increasing numbers of squirrels. With regards to the 5% thinning within the valley this to thin out semi-mature trees to allow the remaining trees to mature to a better shape with more room, they are above 75mm at 1.5m above the ground. We are also noticing more significant issues with squirrel and pest damage and in some cases the tree ends up needing to be felled completely and this informs our decisions over which trees we would be thinning out. Trees also start to grow into historic views and where we cannot prune to provide the correct view we want to remove. They are all a mixture of species including Scots Pine, Beech, Oak, Lime, Cherry and Ash. With regards to the field maples and pollarding some of these have grown up to be quite large and are more appropriate to be pollarded or coppiced and kept lower to provide a different feel as a shrub rather than adding to the tree canopy. We have many field maples within the marked area and would only look to pollard about a of third of them. Most are only just above your 75mm limit and any on the bigger side would be pollarded rather than coppiced.
